A nationwide survey of clinical laboratory directors/managers whose hospitals provide internship sites for baccalaureate degree-seeking medical technologists was conducted. The focus of the study was to gain and examine information concerning 21

century curricular expectations based on workplace needs in the restructured laboratory.

Data analysis revealed that employers expect entry level technologists to be proficient in specimen processing, in the performance and reporting of analytical tests, in instrument related functions, in hospitality, in problem solving, in quality control/quality assurance, in communication, and in flexibility. Basic competency is desirable in professional development, phlebotomy, computer technology and laboratory information systems, and clinical correlation. An awareness is expected of workflow and cost accounting.

The data did not reveal any statistically significant differences for region of the country or teaching involvement on any of the skill expectancies. The size of the hospital was shown to have an effect on the skill expectancy for test performance.

Technologists in the 21

century restructured laboratory will be utilized in new or different roles. Among these roles are management and leadership. Additional content areas should be added to the clinical training to prepare technologists to assume these new roles. The time spent in the internship should be modified to accomplish these additions to the curriculum.

Employers expressed an overall satisfaction with the didactic training of entry level technologists. Among those who expressed dissatisfaction, suggestions were made to focus on management and communication skills, clinical significance, problem solving, and computer skills.

There is nationwide agreement that curricular changes are necessary to prepare entry level technologists for the future laboratory setting. However, the conclusions outlined in the study do not veer from the description of the profession provided in the 1986 NAACLS essentials. The study's proposed curriculum model based on workplace demands conforms to these essentials.
