Aesthetic interpretation is dependent upon the question. The question asked creates a space for an interaction between questioner and respondent, between viewer and viewer and also between art image and viewer. The question also determines the qualities of the interaction. When the work of Martin Buber is applied to aesthetic interpretation, the quality of a relationship can be described as an I-It or an I-Thou relationship. This study examines the role of the question in facilitating genuine dialogue in group discussions. It also considers the nurturing of I-Thou relationships between viewer and image.

The analysis of the qualities of the questions used in aesthetic interpretation is heuristically derived from the examination of my process in two different art historical inquiries. I researched the imagery of the Tuscan Renaissance from 1250--1450 in Italy and the Harlem Renaissance and its aftermath in the United States. The research was concluded by writing two interpretive essays. I then analyzed my questioning processes in the two art historical studies. I compared the qualities of the questions used in individual academic study to the questions I was asking in classroom discussions. I looked at the questions I asked with college art history classes, elementary education teacher candidates and elementary aged children.

The results of my study are presented in a series of essays using metaphor to describe the qualities of questioning, questionability and meaningful dialogue. A sample discussion models the types of questions and subsequent interaction described by the metaphors. It is hoped that the research will encourage discussion, dialogue and meaningful encounters with the arts in the classroom.
