Thesis (M.Sc.)--Dalhousie University (Canada), 2005.
Based on the analysis of data obtained in interviews conducted with 11 male medical students, I explored the values that underlie participation in family-related and employment-related occupations. I found that the values that underlie these occupations are gender ideology, a sense of fairness and responsibility and heroism, which are all influenced by and reflect expected values in students' sociocultural contexts. Students' occupational balance, which reflects their deep sense of responsibility and heroism in career-related occupations and their sense of fairness and responsibility and gender ideologies concerning domestic occupations, will be explored. The implications for the health and occupational well-being of young men in medicine, for theories of occupational science/occupational therapy and for future research are discussed.
