Ongoing political conflicts have resulted in massive increases in transnational migration across the globe. The United States has the world's largest resettlement program accepting tens of thousands of refugees into its borders every year. Visual images and narrative accounts of refugee suffering abound in the media, yet their voices are rarely heard. This dissertation examines how refugee adolescents in the U.S. interpret their social and political worlds through participation in a photography-based after-school program in California. Through eight months of participant observation at the after-school project and twenty focus group and individual interviews with refugee youth from Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America, this ethnographic study contributes to the growing body of literature on immigrant adaptation that recognizes the multitude of identity pathways available and taken up by immigrants and refugees. The findings from this study extend the literature on refugee adaptation by utilizing the concept of freedom to present a multidimensional analysis of the experiences of refugee youth in America.

The major findings reveal a tension between the refugee youths' beliefs in their freedom and the limitations they confronted as a result of preexisting systems of inequality. The students were able to navigate multiple and often seemingly contradictory perceptions of their experiences, which seemed to enable them to be highly successful in their adaptation process. The findings challenge the victim status often ascribed to refugees by highlighting the students' agency in interpreting both the myths and realities of life in the United States. In addition, while the use of photography in educational spaces was found to offer important opportunities for identity work, the findings point to the need for practices that are carefully implemented and reflexively reviewed.
