This study is an empirical examination of students who have completed their educational training in a religious philanthropic foundation to examine how the use of core teachings and religious education affect how students reconcile the pressures of secularization. In that the secularization thesis predicts a disenchantment and dilution of religion from secular pressures, most of the research covers the institutional impact on secularization. There has been little research that has penetrated the realms of the personal and grassroots level of reconciliation, particularly as they are associated with religious philanthropic foundations who are concerned with retaining and sustaining religious identities and commitments. Furthermore, little has been explored in the ways in which religious philanthropic organizations utilize the use of religious education and core teachings to counter the effects of secularization at the micro level, particularly how this is experienced in developing countries.

This study utilized the 14 characteristics of the qualitative naturalistic inquiry paradigm to methodologically examine how 10 Brazilian students, who having completed their educational training programs with the Perpetual Education Fund, perceive their ability to reconcile the pressures of secularization while participating in a religious education and philanthropic program. Purposive sampling of interviews were conducted two to three times with each student over the course of three weeks using a digital recording device and extensive translation, transcription and grounded theory processes of data analysis.

Findings indicate that students who have previously experienced a personal witness or conviction of their relationship with Deity are more prepared to confront the conflicts of secularization. Those who have higher levels of personal religiosity, personal community relationships, and religious capital, also experience less stress in reconciliation. Prior religious status shifts and turning points in ones life such as seminary, missionary service, and other covenantal experiences provide a significant boost to ones religious capital and personal conviction. In addition, student's who seek after prophetic counsel and who have positive relationships with ecclesiastical and religious educational leaders show greater religious commitment. The use of core teachings also demonstrate a higher level of religious commitment and leads to greater ecstatic and revelational type experiences with the God.
