The present work deals with language, truth and ambiguity seen in their reciprocal relationship in the Agamemnon of Aeschylus. Such an approach allows us to shed new light on several motifs of the play and of Aeschylus' thought, such as his concepts of justice and responsibility, his use of imagery and etymologies, his theology and moral issues, and his relationship with earlier thinkers, especially Heraclitus. On the basis of this analysis Aeschylus emerges as a less archaic author than he is normally considered to be, who makes every effort to overcome the uncertainty resulting from his awareness of the instability of mankind, an instability that is based on the limitations of language and the difficulties of communication. As a last achievement, Aeschylean ambiguity, considered in its relationship with language and truth, if on the one hand it shows the limitations of language and communication, on the other hand it can become a useful device for linguistic creation. Such a creation of a partly new language is so powerful in the Agamemnon that it overturns the more commonly intended relationship between reality and language. In Aeschylus' play it is now the latter that seems to create the former.
