The purposes of this study are twofold: (1) to measure levels of faith maturity in adolescents in Guatemalan and American Christian schools using the Faith Maturity Scale (Benson, Donahue & Erickson, 1993), the revised Faith Maturity Scale, (FMS-R, Lierman, 2004) and its two subscales (Vertical- and Horizontal-R), and (2) to explore potential differences among various demographic variables (years in Christian school, year in school, gender, and country of origin).

While there are many goals for the adolescent to achieve when it comes to spiritual education two main views have emerged. One perspective maintains that a strong biblical education program will naturally lead to students with a strong faith maturity. The other thought is that faith maturity needs to be addressed in developmental terms, building upon knowledge and experience to facilitate a student mature in faith. The second idea suggests that if experience is a necessary part of adolescent faith development, the information gathered from this study will support the view that a students, given opportunities, can mature in faith during their adolescent years.
