He was a man of character and a dedicated Christian. A leading aspect of his personality was his love of truth. This he believed to be a natural trait of anyone who aspired after godliness.

Thornwell was a thorough-going "Old School Presbyterian," and voted for the abrogation of the Plan of Union. The controversy between the "Old School/New School" factions serve as a background to understanding Thornwell's ecclesiology, since he viewed himself as always striving to bring out the logical ramifications of "Old School" historic Presbyterianism.

As a Southerner of the early and mid 19th century Thornwell could not help dealing with the issue of slavery. His view of the relation of the Word of God to the Church led him to believe that the Church had no right to declare slave owning a sin per se. This might seem to cast doubt upon such a view of Scripture, but it may be seen that the trouble with it was that he mistook the slavery which the Bible sanctioned as equivalent to the institution of the South. His problem was a faulty exegesis not a faulty doctrine of Scripture.

Thornwell's doctrine of Scripture may be described in one sense as the normal Calvinistic view. The lengths to which he took the concept of perspicuity made it unusual, even for his own day. Also of note was an emphasis upon the unity of the Word.

Thornwell attempted to apply his unique understanding of Scripture to the ecclesiastical controversies of the day. He opposed the use of Boards for the mission work of the Church; he defended the office of ruling Elder as being of Divine authority. Of particular importance was his insistence upon the concept of the "Spirituality of the Church." This view of Scripture was also seen in his defense of the so-called "Revised Book of Discipline."

With the Separation of the Presbyterian Church along sectional lines with the War Between the States, Thornwell's understanding of ecclesiology won the support of the Southern Church. For a time the influence continued, but by the mid twentieth century the PCUS failed to continue in Thornwell's tradition. The birth of the PCA promised a church which had remembered Thornwell, but soon it also had turned away from his influence.
