Aphasia is an acquired language disorder which results from cerebral damage to the left hemisphere. Impairment of naming skills is a common symptom of aphasia. The present investigation examined the relative effects of personalized (semantic) and phonological cues on the facilitation of long-term naming skills in patients with aphasia. Three individuals with reduced naming skills as a result of aphasia participated in the study. An alternating treatments design was used to evaluate treatment effectiveness. Both treatment methods resulted in improved naming skills during training sessions. However, at 3 months posttraining, each participant's naming accuracy was maintained at a higher level for words taught using the personalized cueing method.
