One of the most intriguing contributions to the investigation of social influences on children's conscious control of their own thought processes has been the concept of scaffolding (Wood, Bruner and Ross, 1976; Bruner, 1983). Recent research indicates that scaffolding activity can be measured using global rating schemes (Behrend, Rosengren & Perlmutter, 1992; Lajoie, 1993). The present study rates maternal scaffolding activity during three problem-solving tasks (pegboard, puzzle, block play) using a modified version of the System for Rating Tutor Behaviour (SRTB). Data from 20 mother-child dyads was used to assess the reliability and validity of the revised System for Rating Tutor Behaviour (SRTB2-R) as a measure of scaffolding activity. The study was conducted in two phases. In Phase I the original rating scale (SRTB) was modified and refined using statistical and conceptual analyses. Phase II assessed the reliability and validity of the revised rating scale (SRTB2-R). Data on the reliability and validity of the SRTB2-R are provided and discussed. Correlational analyses between maternal scaffolding activity and child task performance are also discussed. The results indicate that the SRTB2-R evidence a high degree of internal consistency and interrater reliability. The SRTB2-R revealed a statistically significant correlation with the full scale version of the scale on the puzzle task, however, correlational analyses between the SRTB2-R and the SRTB did not achieve statistical significance on the pegboard or the block tasks. The relationship between maternal scaffolding and child task performance was significant for the puzzle task, but not for the pegboard or blocks task. The significance and limitations of the study are discussed. Recommendations for future research include a discussion of rater training when assessing scaffolding activity across tasks.
