Existing data were analyzed to assess the effects of speaking condition and fleshpoint location within the vocal tract on spatial variability for consonant-vowel intervals. 10 males and 10 females participated in the study. Each speaker had four pellets, glued on the midline of the tongue, and one pellet glued to the midline of each lip. The X-ray microbeam system tracked the movements of the pellets while the subject read two sentences, 5-6 times each, at each of three speaking rates (habitual, slow, and fast). One of the sentences was also read in a "clear" speech condition. From these sentences, five stressed consonant-vowel (CV) syllables were chosen for analysis. Based on acoustic segmentation criteria, movements across the 6 pellets X 3(4) conditions X 5 repetitions were extracted for each CV. A variability history (VH) was calculated for each group of 5 repetitions, resulting in a maximum of 24 VHs per speaker. The resulting VHs were each fit with a non-orthogonal quadratic equation. For each CV transition, a 2-way MANOVA blocked on speaker, and accounting for the relationship between variability and pellet distance moved, was computed twice, first with the intercept only of the quadratic equation (a measure of the magnitude of the VH) as the dependent variable and second, with the combination of the 1st and 2nd order terms of the equation without the intercept (a measure of the shape of the VH).

Statistical testing of pairwise post-hoc contrasts failed to uncover any differences in the magnitude or shape of the VHs across all four speaking conditions; however, some omnibus tests for certain transitions indicated the presence of more complex comparisons among the speaking condition VHs. The pattern of variability for the Clear speech condition did not differ significantly from the other conditions indicating that talking clearly appears to involve a similar expression of kinematic variability. Findings from this study indicated that within the tongue or within the lips, the magnitude and shape of the VH was similar. In syllables where the consonant and vowel share the lips and tongue for production, the VHs of the two structures became more similar. These findings based on vocal tract locations were present across the various speaking modes. The results were discussed in terms of the stability of the consonant constriction location, shared vocal tract locations within and across consonants and vowels, and active/inactive status of vocal tract locations for CV productions.
