This study was designed to obtain data relevant to a description of formant-frequency and formant-amplitude characteristics of whispered and phonated vowel samples produced by male and female children, and to describe possible differences between such samples.

Ten male and ten female preadolescent children produced each of the five test vowels (/i/, /ae/, /

, /a/, and /u/) twice in whisper and twice in phonation. Each vowel was sustained at a controlled intensity and mouth-to-microphone distance. These vowel samples were recorded on audio tape for later derivation of their acoustic spectra.

The vowel samples were also randomized and dubbed onto listening audio tapes. Separate tapes were made for the phonated and whispered samples. Eleven judges listened to each of those vowel samples and identified in each instance the vowel that they perceived; and, also, the perceived sex of the child producing the sample.

Frequency and amplitude measurements of the first three formants of both whispered and phonated vowel samples were obtained from spectra produced by real-time wave analysis.

It was found that the phonetic identity of whispered vowel samples was generally not identified as well by listeners as that for phonated samples. The sex of subjects was identified on the basis of auditory perception of the isolated whispered and phonated vowel samples at a better-than-chance rate.

With some exceptions, the first three formants of whispered vowel samples were higher in frequency than those of comparable phonated vowel samples. A larger formant frequency difference between whispered and phonated vowels was evident for F1 than for F2 or F3. The F2 and F3 formant frequencies of vowels produced by the male children were generally lower than those of vowels produced by the females. For the phonated vowels, the formant amplitudes generally decreased from F1 to F2 to F3. For whispered vowels, however, a trend was evident for F1, F2, and F3 to be similar in amplitude. Thus the acoustic spectrum was relatively flat (compared to that for phonated vowels) across the test frequency range.
