The purpose of the project was to measure and assess the impact of teaching a seminar course on "spiritual warfare" to a sample population of pastors and church leaders. This included an evaluation of the biblical, theological and historical basis for the current teaching on Strategic-Level Spiritual Warfare ("SLSW") within the broader context of spiritual warfare per se, together with a review of contemporary literature on the subject.

The problem derives from the radical change in the perception of spiritual warfare which has developed over the last twenty to thirty years, and the emergence of what has come to be known as SLSW. Protagonists of SLSW describe it as a vital methodology empowering believers to overcome satanic powers as a necessary prelude to the work of evangelisation; opponents claim that it is without solid biblical foundation and is apparently based on the evaluation of experience.

The most readily accessible target population was the regional Global Gospel Fellowship pastors' meetings held at Peniel Pentecostal Church, Essex, England. The sample, primarily made up of a cross section of this target population, was largely self-defining, as it consisted of those who had recorded an interest in this subject and who were able to commit to an intensive four-day seminar. To ensure that the final sample was representative of the group as a whole, a method of purposive sampling of the available group ensured it included a range of different denominations, ages, sexes, ministerial status, ethnic origins, educational backgrounds, and attitudes to SLSW practice. In addition, there were a number of international visitors.

Seminar teaching material was developed from a detailed literature review and research into the biblical, historical and theological perspectives of SLSW. In order to measure any change in the delegates' understanding of the subject a questionnaire was compiled, and applied on three separate occasions; namely, pre-seminar, post-seminar, and 3 months after the seminar. The results were subjected to detailed statistical analysis.

A large proportion of the delegates came with quite strong positive beliefs about certain aspects of SLSW teaching/practice. By the end, the majority had concluded that the most important task is to proclaim the word of God in the authority and power of the Spirit of God. Before the seminar, many recognised the vital significance of a miracle ministry in the context of church growth and this belief was strengthened by the teaching.

The results supported the author's original conviction that the concepts and teaching of SLSW have drawn people away from the eternal truths of scripture and by refocusing their understanding on what the Bible actually teaches about spiritual warfare ("The Peniel model"), individuals would be enabled to live and walk in Christ's total victory over the devil and all demonic powers at Calvary.
