Spirituality has received growing attention by health professionals since the 1970's. When planning healthcare, however, a great deal of a nurse's attention is given to the biopyschosocial dimension of a person, but little is given to the spiritual dimension (Carson, 1989; Cowley & Derezotes, 1994; Dossey, Keegan, & Guzzetta, 2005).

Spirituality has received growing attention by health professionals since the 1970's. There are numerous studies regarding nursing expertise in the biopyschosocial dimensions. Studies of nursing expertise in providing spiritual care are virtually nonexistent. My search of the literature revealed only two studies that identified and utilized nursing experts in spirituality as participants (Emblem & Pest, 2001; Estby, Freel, Hart, Resse, & Clow, 1994). Neither of these studies investigated the process as to how these nurses developed their expertise in spirituality, nor how they actually integrated spirituality into their nursing practice.

The purpose of this study was to develop an understanding of the process that spiritual experts undergo, which makes it possible for them to meet the spiritual needs of patients and or teach spiritual care to nursing students. Using a phenomenological heuristic approach, I sought an answer to the following question: How do nurses and teachers of nursing students develop expertise in spirituality as an aspect of their practice?

As a result of the purposeful sampling procedure, the thirteen participants were all female, white, and Christian with a strong belief in God. They had been teaching and or practicing nursing for at least five years. In regards to education, five of the candidates possessed doctoral degrees, four held master degrees, three had baccalaureate degrees, and one graduated from a diploma program.

Data collection included: (a) photographs taken by the thirteen participants, (b) one hour-long audio tape-recorded interviews with each of the participants utilizing a semi-structured format, and (c) drawings done by the participants. All data were collected within a four month period. The software program NVivo was utilized to support the study's structures and aid in the management and analysis of data.

The analysis of the data revealed that the participants came from diverse family backgrounds, ranging from very supportive families to reports of unhappy childhoods. Family backgrounds had little relevance as to when the participants began to actively explore their spirituality. Some were very spiritually aware as young children, while others consciously began their spiritual journey at different stages of their lives.

The concept of connectedness was not only important in the participants' personal lives, but also within their practice. There was a consensus among the participants that incorporating spirituality into nursing education was problematic, but some of the teachers had found successful methods.

The unexpected outcome indicates that visual data played various roles throughout the course of the study. A majority of the participants indicated that having to take photographs of their spirituality made them think more deeply about the status of their spirituality.

The participants formed a fairly homogenous group which decreased the generalizability of findings to other health care providers. As a consequence, the findings of this study need to be limited to the perceptions of the thirteen participants who chose to take part in this study.
