The dissertation seeks to explain the positions Desiderius Erasmus and John Colet demonstrated toward ecclesiastical authority between the dates of 1499 and 1519. Heiko Oberman proposed that since the patristic period the Church held to a two-source theory of authority. Traditions and teachings not found in Scripture were considered as equally authoritative for the life of the Church.

The relationship between Erasmus and Colet is also explored. The definitive recent biography on John Colet asserts that Erasmus merely tolerated Colet. The dissertation refutes the claims and illustrates the genuine nature of their friendship. It also examines the exegetical approach both men demonstrate toward Scripture. In 1499 Erasmus and Colet debated over the passion of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane. The disagreement reveals the exegetical styles and authorities appealed to by both men. A further point of analysis is the attitude both men demonstrate toward ecclesiastical authority. Erasmus and Colet had individually been accused of heresy at different times. The circumstances surrounding these events are explored and the rationale of their defenses are noted.

The role of tradition in the authority of the Church from the first century to the Reformation is described. One can see the two-source theory of authority from the medieval era to the rulings at the Council of Trent. The authoritative force of ecclesiastical tradition was opposed by Protestant reformers and defended by Catholic theologians through the nineteenth-century.

The study concludes with an analysis of Erasmus and Colet's view of ecclesiastical authority. An attempt to understand their views in light of Heiko Oberman's theory of authority reveals that both men do not believe in a single-source of authority. They also do not reflect a position consistent with Oberman's two-source position. Both men maintain a high view of Scripture with ecclesiastical tradition in a subordinate position. Erasmus is ready to contradict Church tradition if his exegesis of Scripture in the original language warrants. He does not contradict Scripture with tradition. Both men reflect a creative freedom in their exegesis as they challenged the corrupt practices of the Church from 1499 to 1519.
