Although scholars working in the Arts and Humanities have recognized and addressed pregnancy/childbirth as an emergent theme for women's self-representation, they have not examined it across art forms in an effort to understand the similarities and differences in the representational strategies employed therein. This researcher sought to redress this gap through a study which sought to determine the degree to which women's autobiographical film shares common representational strategies with women's literary autobiography and self-portraiture in their representations of the pregnancy/childbirth experience.

520 $a A methodology was conceived that performed a two-part aesthetic analysis of the selected works in each of the art forms. This methodology first examined the aesthetic properties of each selected work as a free-standing text, and then analyzed how each work utilized the specific conventions and languages of its respective medium. A comparison of the results followed. In order to perform a rigorous comparative analysis, the researcher prepared a list of corresponding questions directed to each of the selected works.
520 $a This study focused exclusively on literary, visual and cinematic works produced by women during the latter half of the twentieth century from European-derived, English-speaking cultures. The selected works in this study are: Carole Maso's The Room Lit by Roses (2000), Rian Brown's autobiographical film, The Presence of Water (1997), and Anne Harris' self-portrait Second Portrait with Max (1996--1997).
