This thesis is designed to provide a diachronic-geographical description on the Quanzhen Taoism in the south of the Yangtze River. It tracks the development of Quanzhen Taoism from Quanzhen's spread in the south of the Yangtze River to the establishment of the Republic of China in 1912, with geographically focusing on Suzhou, Songjiang, Changzhou, Taicang, Hangzhou, Jiaxing, and Huzhou, which were the cultural and economic centers of the south of the Yangtze River, as well as seedbed and important bases of the Talisman and Register Sect of Zhengyi Taoism. Take a close look into the development of Quanzhen Taoism in an area where the Talisman and Register Sect flourished would be very meaningful in understanding Taoism in the south of the Yangtze River in-depth.

520 $a The study draws its sources in three folds way: various local history, steles and inscriptions, and notes materials. These materials' value for academic research had long been noticed, yet with few fruitful researches in depth through a close reading up to now. Considering which, this thesis bases on thoroughly reading on materials mentioned above and other related researches, and its historical description is consisted of the following two parts: the historical development of Monasteries of Quanzhen Taoism as the main clue, and researches on related persons and affairs. It aims at a diachronic description of 640 years, since Yuan dynasty when Quanzhen's appearance, about Quanzhen Taoism in the south of the Yangtze River. The development of Quanzhen Taoism of this period is divided into different phases of vicissitude, such as appearance, decadency, thriving, and flourishing, which can be differentiated according to the numbers of the Quanzhen Monasteries in according periods.
520 $a With a detailed diachronic description of the vicissitude of Quanzhen Taoism at hand, the author sets out to investigate Wang Changyue's contribution to thriving of Quanzhen Taoism in the south of the Yangtze River, and concludes that Wang Changyue's trip to the south of the Yangtze River and ordinations were of great importance for the development of Quanzhen Taoism. Nevertheless, Zhou Mingyang, the ninth Master of Quanzhen Taoism, held a critical position in the development of Quanzhen Taoism early Qing dynasty. During the late Qing dynasty, Min Yide, one of the eleventh disciples, did contribute much to the development of Quanzhen Taoism, because of which he deserved the title of founder of Jingai Mountain Sect. After then, most Quanzhen monasteries in the south of the Yangtze River regarded Jingai Mountain in Huzhou as their headstream.
520 $a Besides diachronic description, the author depicts the differences among various regions within the south of the Yangtze River through geographical way. Through which, the author attempts to clarify the regionally characteristics of Quanzhen Taoism in the south of the Yangtze River. Although we cannot demonstrate the uniqueness of the trends, such as fusion of sects and secularization, considering the historical development of Taoism as a whole during according periods, the author does manage to illuminate these trends appeared, comparatively speaking, more vehement and conspicuous, especially during the Qing dynasty. Furthermore, to find out the regionally characteristic of Quanzhen Taoism in the south of the Yangtze River more meticulously, the author delivers analysis on the social status of the Taoists, as well as their conversion through a socio-historical way.
