This dissertation is a study of the religious and political climate in Anglo-Saxon England in the second half of the tenth century. By analyzing both the primary and secondary sources, a new theory of English kingship, combining both centralizing and unifying processes, is proposed; this theory is developed further to suggest that by 973 A.D., King Edgar, of the royal house of Wessex, had created an English Empire.

The two main personages responsible for the developments in the English monarchy are St. Dunstan, Archbishop of Canterbury and King Edgar. This study begins with a thorough examination of Dunstan's early life and education. This is necessary in order to explain what motivating factors compelled Dunstan to initiate an ambitious plan to reform both the English Church and the English monarchy. To accomplish his goals, Dunstan allied himself with other powerful members of the Anglo-Saxon nobility and created a network of supporters which would aid him in his task. Dunstan, however, suffered a setback when King Eadwig ascended the English throne in 955 A.D. Out of favor with the current king, Dunstan had to wait for the next ruler, Edgar, whom his supporters fostered and educated. Edgar became King of England in 959 A.D.

Together with Dunstan, whom he made Archbishop of Canterbury in 960 A.D., Edgar embarked on an impressive program that included both ecclesiastical and political reform. The English Benedictine Reform Movement of the tenth century is well-known to scholars of Anglo-Saxon history, and it reached its zenith during the reign of Edgar. In addition, Edgar reformed the economy and the bureaucracy, and issued innovative lawcodes that recognized the special status of his Scandinavian subjects. All of these factors worked together to increase the power and prestige of the English monarchy both at home and abroad, and created an English identity for the people living under this new, imperial, system.

By carefully studying all of the elements, religious and political, of mid and late tenth century Anglo-Saxon England, this dissertation portrays a new picture of this dynamic age: that of a united, powerful and centrally controlled empire that culminated in the reign of King Edgar the Peaceable.
