520 $a First, four types of expressions are found to function as topic in topic chain. They are: noun phrases, demonstrative phrases, pronominal, and zero anaphora. These expressions denote entities that are assumed to be familiar. This finding confirms Tsao's referential requirement of Chinese topic, namely, a Chinese topic should denote a locatable entity that is in a particular shared set or in the general shared knowledge of the speaker and the hearer. Furthermore the discourse functions of these topic-encoding expressions are investigated. Noun phrases mark the boundaries of conversational units and discourse discontinuity. Demonstrative phrases mainly indicate discourse continuity. Pronominal topics denote conversational participants and central characters in conversational narratives. Topic-encoding zero anaphora in the first clause of a topic chain always indicate discourse continuity.
520 $a Second, the interaction between topic chain and conversations is addressed. Topic chain is found to interact with basic conversational units and turn-taking system. The semantic relationships found in topic chain structure is usually part of a larger semantic sequence. The functions of topic chain in conversations are discussed under four headings: connection, production, comprehension and interaction. Topic chain can connect parts of discourse, encourage the production of both efficient and repetitive languages, facilitate comprehension, and show speakers' interactions and participatory listenership.
520 $a Secondary to above discussion, six types of semantic relationships are found among clauses of topic chain. They are: (1) coordinative relationship, (2) contrastive relationship, (3) explanatory relationship, (4) temporal relationship, (5) causal relationship, and (6) conditional relationship. Some of the relationships can be signaled by the syntactic structures of the clauses, but some cannot. Clausal connectives that mark the semantic relationships are found to function at both local and global levels.
520 $a The above findings suggest that topic chain is a discourse unit and must be explained and understood in discourse context. Moreover the study represents findings in the aspects of topic chain that haven't been discussed in prior studies and thus leads to a deeper understanding of topic chain as well as Chinese conversations.
