Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University, 1994.
Agrammatism has been a subject of great interest to aphasiologists for more than 100 years. However, there are still many debates. For example, how can we explain the variations and regularities in symptomatology of different patients? What is the distinction between agrammatics and paragrammatics? Are the syntactic production problems and the often coexisting syntactic comprehension deficiency manifestations of a common deficit to the 'central syntactic mechanism'?Subjects--Topical Terms:

In this study, I tried to address some of these questions by testing 8 Chinese-speaking Broca's aphasics and 7 Chinese-speaking fluent aphasics (4 Wernicke's and 3 conduction aphasics) with a highly structured morphology and syntax test battery which included oral production and auditory comprehension tests for several morphosyntactic constructions commonly used in Chinese. By providing obligatory contexts, this study demonstrated that Chinese-speaking agrammatics do conmit morphological errors that are not easily found in their free narratives because of the characteristics of Chinese (lack of an inflectional system and great flexibility in using function words). Furthermore, some regularity was found in the relative vulnerability of some grammatical morphemes. The interaction of syntactic factors, semantic factors, grammaticality, and paradigm size was used to explain these phenomena.

A comparison of the production performance between the Broca's aphasics and the fluent aphasics indicates that while the Broca's aphasics did have problems in generating syntactic forms, there is no definite evidence that the fluent aphasics also have such deficits. Instead, the latter might have erred due to poor monitoring of the speech output process.

The comprehension tests did not differentiate the Broca's aphasics and the conduction aphasics well in most subtests. Further, the production subtest profile and the comprehension subtest profile did not parallel each other. Thus, it appears that the syntactic production processes and the syntactic comprehension processes can be impaired independently.
