Thesis (Ph.D.)--Yale University, 1994.
My dissertation is a study of the narrative art and taxonomy of human nature in the Shih-shuo hsin-yu XXXXX (A New Account of Tales of the World), which I define as the first example of character-writing in China. "Character-writing" refers to a type of literary work which focuses on the categorization of personality-types and characterization of human figures. The formation of this narrative genre in China resulted directly from a social practice prevailing during the Wei-Chin period, the jen-lun chien-shih XXXXX, or character appraisal. The first chapter examines the formation of the Shih-shuo t'i, or the genre of the Shih-shuo hsin-yu, via an etymological and historical survey of the jen-lun chien-shih, or character appraisal. In the second chapter, I conduct a philosophical and psychological study on the reciprocation between character appraisal and the growth of self-awareness during the Wei-Chin period, which, I believe, caused the profusion of Wei-Chin personalities and thereby spurred the birth of Chinese character-writing. Chapters Three and Four examine the two kinds of characterization in the Shih-shuo hsin-yu. Chapter Three looks into the taxonomy of human nature represented by the thirty-six chapter titles, focusing on its taxonomic features and the principles underlying this classification. Chapter Four tries to explain why and how the linguistic signs in the Shih-shuo hsin-yu can be transformed into idiosyncratic individuals active between pages and lines. Since the Shih-shuo hsin-yu is a highly reflexive work, the discussions in this dissertation will be conducted mainly with the theories abstracted from the book itself. In addition, throughout this dissertation, I compare Chinese character-writing (including the Shih-shuo hsin-yu and its numerous imitations in both China and Japan) with its Western counterpart, Theophrastan character-writing. I believe that the special features of the Shih-shuo hsin-yu and its genre become more apparent when contrasted with a similar genre from a different cultural tradition.Subjects--Topical Terms:
