520 $a The phenomenon which is associated with the rites celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, appears to be a reminiscence of the forms of Iberian medieval religious theatre which were brought to Brazil by missionaries and immigrants. Featuring singing, praises and dances which were usually performed in front of the Nativity Tableaux, it focuses on the Shepherds on their way to Bethlehem. As a sort of overlapping of erudite and popular religiosity, it first appears as the result of the mutual influence of cultures brought by colonization. During the nineteenth century however, the Pastoril began to have more and more in common with urban popular culture.
520 $a This thesis consists of eight chapters arranged in two parts. Part one is dedicated to the socio historical contextualization of the Pastoril and is subdivided into four chapters in addition to an introductory chapter.
520 $a The second part of this thesis is devoted to the analysis of the Pastoril per se. In order to dissect the phenomenon better, three of its most characteristic features are examined separately: the plots and characters, the lyrics, and the music. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
