This dissertation explores the emerging practices of adolescence within a population of refugees from southern Somalia undergoing resettlement in the American Midwest. This group, known as the Somali Bantu, traditionally marks the passage from childhood to adulthood through initiation rituals which provide a framework for inculcating identity to the initiates as male and female adult members of the group. The practice of this ritual event has not only been disrupted by flight and resettlement, but its formative role is also being displaced upon resettlement through integration into the US educational system.

520 $a Using participant observation fieldwork and informal interviews, I explore the practices of teenage refugees, their families, and teachers in constructing identity within this new, extended space of adolescence. The results of my ethnographic research indicate that adult members of the Somali Bantu community inculcate cultural identity through the practices of daily life. Meanwhile, media consumption has become a socially created routine used for teaching social values related to gender. For the girls, the viewing of African dramas within the family reinforces the socially sanctioned goal of marriage. For the boys, the US social imaginary is far more accessible through the consumption of professional wrestling, and its commercially available products extend its symbols of achievement into the boys' adolescent lives. Finally, adulthood is complicated by two different cultural approaches. The American educational system exposes these students to a system of status change based on individual success at academic testing, an alternative to one based on a collective peer group at initiation. While this approach is increasingly influential among these teenagers within the community, marriage has emerged as a critical life cycle event signaling adulthood. As adolescence becomes normalized within this population, these two cultural markers of adulthood will continue to compete for influence.
