The increasing American incarceration rate is draining federal and state budgets as well as overburdening the country's jails and prisons pushing them to the breaking point. Although African Americans have been hit the hardest by this social problem as large scale displacement of black men and women from general society has destabilized black families and communities, many African Americans are apathetic toward the plight of those incarcerated and appear reluctant to become involved in rehabilitative efforts such as prison ministry. One primary reason seems to be because of misconceptions resulting to cumulative exposure to negative media representations of African Americans, incarceration, and the incarcerated. Using the theories of social construction, media dependency, and cultivation as theoretical frameworks, this qualitative examination explored the role media played in shaping the perceptions 20 black Christians had of incarceration and the incarcerated. It was found that media, primarily television, played a key role in the formulation of what the study participants believed about jail, prison, and inmates and that some media content have more of a cultivation effect upon perceptions of incarceration and the incarcerated than others.
