Thesis (M.A.E.)--Pacific Lutheran University, 2008.
This study explores how the thinking skills developed in studio art classrooms fit in with teaching geared to the development of the brain, specifically how making the teaching to the brain explicit in the classroom effects learning. In this thesis I will step away from the controversy between art for increased learning vs. art for art's sake and try to align the existing methods used for effective studio teaching with teaching strategies which align with how the brain functions. The study completed for this thesis finds indications of the effectiveness of teaching about the brain, but highlights a disconnect between knowledge of the brain and how the brain affects student artwork. Taking what we have learned about the functioning and development of the brain and exploring what implications this research has for education, this study explores the art learning that could happen when these two fields are merged.
