The poetry of Friedrich Holderlin is a fruitful field for studying temporality in literature, both regarding structure as well as thematics. "Wie wenn am Feiertage," one of Holderlin's pivotal texts, is particularly well-suited to a study of temporality, in that the poet announces the beginning of a glorious new day and age in the poem. A problem arises through the turn to an opposite kind of time at the poem's end. A reading of three texts by Martin Heidegger, dealing with art, poetry, and this poem, respectively, points to a different understanding of both the poem and of time itself. Heidegger's importance comes from both his method of reading and his recognition that poetry calls man to a historical decision.Subjects--Topical Terms:
