The experiment took place over a two week period. Between the pretest and the posttest, the experimental group completed a study guide (Self-Care in Health: A Study Guide), developed for this research, on a self-instructional basis. In addition, they participated in two one-hour, directed, small group discussions concerning their reactions to the study guide. Two masters nurses prepared in the area of psychiatric mental-health nursing served as discussion leaders. The control group received no intervention between the pretest and the posttest.

Five one-way ANCOVA's were used to test the statistical hypotheses. Findings indicated that: (a) The self-care educational program did not significantly influence participants' power and capacity to engage in a system of self-care behaviors as measured by the Exercise of Self-Care Agency Scale; (b) the self-care educational program did not significantly influence participants' health valuing as measured by the Health Values Measure; (c) the self-care educational program did significantly decrease (at the .05 level) the extent to which participants viewed their health state as resulting from both chance and powerful others as measured by the CHLC and the PHLC Subscales of the MHLC Scale; (d) the self-care educational program did significantly increase (at the .01 level) the extent to which participants viewed their health state as resulting from some behavior of their own; and (e) significant correlation coefficients for the dependent variables were expected. The findings were interpreted within the limitations of the study which included: (a) a sample of convenience, (b) self-report measures, and (c) health as defined by the researcher.
