Thesis (Ph.D.)--Walden University, 2010.
There is a widespread perception within the Christian religious education community that traditional print-based curricula fail to engage children brought up in a multi media environment. Little research exists on what impact mass media use in religious instruction has had on the transmission of religious values in formal religious education. This study examined how multi media were used to effectively engage students aged 10 to 12 in religious education. This grounded study utilized McLuhan's tetradic media analysis as a conceptual framework. Data sources included surveys completed by 47 volunteer Sunday school teachers and a content analysis of the curriculum used. Data were analyzed to identify themes and patterns. The results indicated that peer to peer, teacher to student, and parent to student relationships are primary in influencing the success or failure of receipt of the intended media presentation message. Results also indicated participants had concerns over message consistency within and quality of video segments; greater interactivity of websites used, including fully functional chat; and improved, user-friendly companion websites. This study contributes to positive social change by providing religious curriculum planners and instructors with data on how to effectively use multimedia to teach moral and ethical behaviors that help prevent juvenile delinquency and promote better citizenship.
