The two-fold purpose of the study was first, to gauge the impact of parental involvement on the instruction of nutrition and physical fitness curriculum for children, and second, to identify practices and activities that help children develop lifelong wellness habits. The objectives were: (1) to assess student and parent knowledge gained through the nutrition and fitness program, (2) to evaluate the effectiveness of the program in delivering specific health content, (3) to determine the effect of parental involvement on the child's attainment of nutritional and physical fitness knowledge, and (4) to identify successful activities and practices in the delivery of health curriculum for both students and parents.

Data were collected from 29 primarily Hispanic, low-income students and parents from a Southern California area elementary school that participated in an after-school health program of nutrition and physical fitness. There was a significant increase physical fitness knowledge and a near significant increase in nutritional knowledge. The impact of parental involvement could not be measured due to a limited sample size. This study exemplifies the need for future research that focuses on methods to increase parental involvement and properly measure its impact on health education for children.
