The purpose of this study was to investigate parental perceptions of childhood obesity in southwestern West Virginia. Childhood obesity has become a growing epidemic and major medical concern in the United States. By assessing parental perceptions of this issue, future research and education can be determined.

520 $a The sample consisted of one-hundred and eleven parents in Wyoming, McDowell, Boone, Raleigh, Mingo, and Logan counties. Two sites were chosen within the six counties. Parents completed a nineteen-item questionnaire that measured their perceptions of childhood obesity and included demographic data.
520 $a Data was collected and statistical analysis was performed using the Pearson Correlation Coefficient. Findings revealed that there was no correlation found between a child having a high BMI and their parent's perception of their weight; suggesting that parents may not realize it when their child is overweight.
