Dietary fiber has been shown to induce satiation and enhance satiety. Effects of dietary fiber on satiety may be modulated by subject characteristics and dietary constituents. The objective was to investigate the effects of altering fiber composition in a high-protein breakfast bar on subjective satiety in overweight and obese women, classified on the basis of dietary restraint status. We hypothesized that unrestrained eaters would report greater satiety after consuming the soluble-fiber bars compared to the insoluble-fiber bars and find both fiber bars to be more satiating than the low-fiber control bars.

Subjects reported less hunger following consumption of the soluble-fiber bars than the insoluble-fiber bars in the two-hour period after breakfast, but the fiber conditions did not differ from control. We found no interaction between condition and restraint at any time point or when quantified as a 2-hr or 4-hr response. Our negative results indicate that adding soluble or insoluble fiber to a breakfast meal is unlikely to affect food intake as it did not affect subjective satiety in restrained or unrestrained women.
