The method of this thesis is as follows. The introduction exposes the reader to the Sunday School Board and the need for this thesis. This section identifies the outline as following the development of American Sunday School education and publications from 1780 to 1891. Although this thesis begins with the non-denominational Sunday School movement, the majority of discussion will focus on Southern Baptist publications.

Chapter one explores the development of Sunday Schools from the late eighteenth through mid-nineteenth century. Non-denominational Sunday School programs taught rudimentary education to young and underprivileged children. These programs developed from a system of paid teachers and staff to voluntary efforts of evangelical churches. Denominational work, including the Baptists, began after several churches adopted Sunday School work as a ministry of the church. Many Sunday School societies and unions formed during the early nineteenth century. The American Baptist Publication Society, founded in 1824, represents one of these groups to produce Sunday School literature.

Chapter two analyzes Southern Baptist publications from 1845 through 1873. The publication development included four unique attempts from within and without conventional support. The first attempt began just two years following the SBC's formation by twenty-five men when they formed Southern Baptist Publication Society in South Carolina. Although the Society never received the Convention's official endorsement, Southern Baptists supported its publication and distribution of religious educational material in the South. A second attempt started when the Bible Board of the Southern Baptist Convention formed in 1851. This officially recognized board received its commission to spread the work of Sunday School education throughout the South. The Convention, however, discontinued the Board in 1863 as a result of the American Civil War. A third publication attempt began with the formation of the Southern Baptist Sunday School Union in 1858. The Union failed to foster Southern support and ceased operations by 1862. Lastly, The SBC formed a Sunday School Board in 1863 after Basil Manly, Jr.'s appeal for children's educational work. Despite its strong leadership from Manly and John A. Broadus, the board lasted only ten years.

Chapter three explores the development of the New South or post-bellum Southern culture. Southern reconstruction provides the context of the origin of the Sunday School Board. How did industry, urbanization, economics, and education help create a New South? In addition, the competition between the Northern and Southern mission boards reveals a struggle for Southern Baptist identity. As a result of the Northern Home Mission Societies continued missionary deployments across the South, the Convention's influence diminished. In 1882, the Home Mission Board appointed Isaac T. Tichenor as its Corresponding Secretary. Tichenor worked to reestablish the South for Southern Baptists. Tichenor's zeal to reclaim the Southern states as a mission field for the Convention empowered the Home Mission Board to expand its Sunday School work. He recognized the importance of a publication board to help reclaim the South for the SBC.

Chapter four is the historical account of James M. Frost and his influence toward forming the Sunday School Board in 1891. The board received both Southern Baptist support and opposition. The feelings and opinions from Baptists were expressed throughout the state newspapers. Many opposed the new board for the sake of North and South relations as well as the competent work of the American Baptist Publication Society. However, the creation of the Sunday School Board exemplified Baptist principles. Frost recognized the importance of local church autonomy. On the other hand, Frost also recognized the importance of denominational loyalty. ^ The principle of local church autonomy allowed each church to choose its own religious literature. Denominational loyalty, derived as a function of missions, encouraged each church to support the new Board. Opposition toward the new Board was resolved through the debates between James B. Gambrell, editor of the Baptist Standard, and Frost. A compromise reached during the 1891 Convention allowed for a joint recommendation regarding the formation of the Sunday School Board. In the end, Southern Baptists accepted the resolution to form the Sunday School Board. Despite the presence of American Baptist Publication Society literature throughout their churches, Southern Baptists unified behind this fifth publication attempt.

Chapter five is a conclusion of this thesis. Each individual chapter identifies areas of unique contribution or lasting influence from the development of Sunday School education and publications. The final chapter draws these conclusions together into a succinct discussion of the various Sunday School Board contributions and influence. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
