The primary purpose of this study was to examine the differences in perception of needed computer skills for recent industrial technology (IT) graduates between universities and companies in North Carolina. The data for this study were collected via surveys and telephone interviews using reliable and valid questionnaires. Responses were received from 77 of 94 (82%) of the university faculty members (all 6 universities were represented) and 69 of 85 (81%) of the companies' personnel or human resource directors.

520 $a University respondents rated computer management information system and computer production skill competencies significantly higher than did the company respondents. Both university and company respondents rated understanding word-processing and e-mail as the top two computer skill competencies of graduates. There was a significant difference between the responses of college professors and companies regarding the computer production skill competencies of graduates.
520 $a When comparing computer hardware used by universities and the computer hardware used by companies, the researcher found a significant difference in the use of the following processors by college professors and companies: 486 or older, Pentium II, and Power PC 604 or older. Significant differences were found in the use of the following peripherals by college professors and companies: plotters, CD-writing devices, bar code scanners, magnetic strip readers, and audio digitizers. Significant differences were found in five out of eight items selected for the use of operating systems by college professors and companies: MAC OS/8, MAC OS/7 or older, Windows NT, Windows 3.x, and DOS.
520 $a A significant difference existed between the program emphasis placed on specific computer competencies as perceived by college professors and the knowledge level of recent IT hires as reported by companies. There were significant differences between the amount of emphasis placed on the program and what IT graduates needed to know, as perceived by college professors. There were also significant differences between what “recent IT hires know” and what “IT graduates needed to know” as perceived by companies.
