This study's purpose was to investigate the efficacy of a computer game based on computer learning theory and the efficacy of using the World Wide Web delivery system to increase the knowledge of dental hygiene students in basic science achievement. This causal comparative study used two measures of student achievement that included performance on a pretest-posttest and achievement on the National Certification examination. Additional analysis included the students' perceived learning in an open-ended learning environment and their perception of gaming as a remedial learning tool delivered via the World Wide Web.

The research addressed these issues: Was there a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores with the intervention of the Dental Jeopardy game activity? How did the use of a computer game delivered via the World Wide Web impact National Certification examination scores? What were the student perceptions of World Wide Web based game learning?

The findings showed statistically significant (p < .01) change in the pretest-posttest achievement. The findings did not find significant change on the National Certification examination. The study found significant relationships between grade point average and two variables (pretest and posttest). There was also a significant relationship between pretest and posttest and between high game score (achievement) and total game playing time.

In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that many students improved academically and enjoyed the Dental Jeopardy game. Significant considerations for future study should include duplication with a larger sample, review of preferred learning styles of the population, and use of a true control group.
