A total of 191 subjects' charts (165 females and 26 males) were reviewed from a rural Midwest region. These subjects were free-living and had previously sought weight-loss counseling at a Registered Dietitian's private practice. Subjects were not included if they were under 18 years of age, had an existing eating disorder, (other than binge eating) and/or were underweight according to BMI.

Our study found BMI was significantly higher for males versus females. Emotional eating was also found to be statistically significant based on gender, binge eating tendencies, and whether or not subjects reported being forced to clean their plate as a child. Gender, binge eating, childhood weight status and being forced to clean the plate during childhood were found to be significant predictors of whether or not subjects recognized and listened to hunger cues.

Although our study included a small sample size, these results do show a significant relationship between some childhood food experiences and adult food behaviors. Additional studies are needed with larger sample populations to study the impact of childhood food experiences and weight status on adult body mass index and food behaviors.
