Cardiovascular disease has been and continues to be the leading cause of death in the United States and worldwide. Although several of the causative factors of cardiovascular disease have been identified, recent reports are suggesting that sleep behaviors may be an additional independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. A critical review of the literature revealed that North Americans have increasingly altered their lifestyle in regard to sleep patterns over the course of the past 3 to 4 decades. However, there remains an important gap in the current literature regarding the long-term impact of these lifestyle changes on health and disease. The purpose of this investigation was to assess the impact of current sleep patterns on the inflammatory response of the body in relation to the opponent process model as an early indicator of cardiovascular disease. A case-control study was conducted to determine whether there was an association among the duration and timing of sleep and C-reactive protein levels among an adult population (N=232). After chi-squared analysis, t-tests, ANOVA and ANCOVA tests were performed findings from this research revealed that there were no statistical significance among sleep duration, sleep timing and C-reactive protein levels with the exception of BMI as an independent risk factor for sleep timing. Social change implications of this study may include the need for widespread C-reactive protein screenings as it was revealed that the mean levels for all participants were at a high risk level. In providing these screenings the early detection and prevention of cardiovascular disease may result in the reduction of the incidence of heart attacks and strokes.
