Based on the censored species data, we also proposed to use the Neyman and Scott's C(alpha) test, the residual plot, log ratio plot and gradient plot to detect the heterogeneity of the population. C(alpha) test is the locally most powerful test.

Simulation studies showed that the C(alpha) test is powerful to detect whether the population is heterogeneous. Three graphical diagnostics can provide visional information about the homogeneity.

The species problem is important and has wide applications. Estimating the number of species in a population based on a random sample of individuals has been thoroughly investigated. For a variety of purposes, data are often censored in the sense that the exact numbers of individuals from some species are not recorded once they exceed a certain threshold. Mixtures of doubly-truncated Poisson densities were proposed as an alternative to the existing approximate procedures. Certain lower bounds to the number of species were proposed. Computational issues in nonparametric maximum likelihood estimation were examined. Both simulation and real example studies showed that the estimators proposed in this study are better than the existing estimators.

An EST is a partial sequence generated from tissue-specific cDNA libraries. ESTs provide vital information for gene discovery, expression profiling, etc. Some genes have high expressions and are easy to be detected and some are hard to be detected. It is infeasible to sequence all clones to discover all the expressed genes. In this study, we used the zero-truncated Poisson mixture model, applied the species accumulation curve to ESTs and their clustered consensus data, and optimal stopping time can be decided by this curve according to biologist's demand. By applying the empirical Bayesian estimator, we can detect the differentially expressed genes in different cDNA libraries.
