Thesis (M.A.)--Greensboro College, 2023.
Teachers nationwide open their doors to new students every new academic year; some of these students are newcomer international ELLs. Being a new student can be overwhelming for a regular student in their first year; adding the fear and anxiety of being a foreign multilingual learner (MLL) can be downright demanding. Designing lessons and creating instructional resources for teachers working with ELLs/MLLs can be demanding. Finding the balance of helping students beyond academics is a challenging undertaking. This paper includes a handbook that provides information about the influence of social-emotional skills in education and strategies to implement social-emotional education (SEL) to offer different ways to facilitate the transition for ELL newcomers. This handbook offers guidance and strategies that help teachers be aware of the many aspects students' lack of social-emotional skills can impact. With this, teachers can intentionally add to their lesson plans and strategies that will benefit the learning process to promote the extensive well-being of ELLs, leading to academic success.
