Aspects of empowerment theory currently under debate include considerations of whether or not empowerment is individually or group oriented, whether it is self-esteem or socio-politically oriented, what position power holds in empowerment, and what the source of empowerment is. Using a case study approach in further examining these concerns, 27 direct care workers from residential treatment settings in New York state were interviewed regarding their perspectives on empowerment in their work lives. Emerging themes were analyzed using a constant comparative analysis and then juxtaposed with the debates on empowerment theory in order to confirm, contradict, and expand aspects of that theory. In particular, direct care workers make a case for empowerment as a politicized construct with a view of structural power embedded in the term. They perceive the sources of empowerment coming from multiple sites. They include a private/public split in their perspectives on their experiences of empowerment and they raise specific concerns about structures that require an examination of disempowerment. Additionally the research shows a contradiction in the direct care workers' wishes for a group orientation that could further their empowerment yet an inability to make that group orientation happen. Implications are discussed for the methods used in future empowerment research. Questions for other future research are posed. Recommendations are also offered for use of this research in furthering direct care practice, particularly in enhancing the role of the direct care worker.
