This dissertation examines the historically-neglected radio broadcasts of Walter Benjamin. Now known for his theoretical writings, Benjamin was also an established radio broadcaster in the Weimar Republic. Primarily from 1929 until early 1933, he produced and performed a wide range of broadcast talks for children and adults. Benjamin's radio broadcasts are framed in the context of radio's explosive growth during the Weimar period. Due to financial and political considerations, German officials intended to create a didactic medium funded by user fees and regulated by government officials. The first broadcast in late 1923 was followed by rapid expansion: the 1,500 users of 1924 swelled to half a million in 1925 and over four million by 1933. As a new, didactic medium with ever-expanding broadcast hours, radio required much programming. The insatiable demand for programming created opportunities for the writers of the Weimar Republic: many took advantage of the new medium to supplement their income while promoting their works and ideas. Financially straightened, Benjamin likewise created eighty or so broadcasts on cultural, literary, and children's topics. As well, he collaborated on didactic radio plays. Benjamin's efforts to narrate stories through the new medium are analyzed here within the framework of his Storyteller and Work of Art essays. Benjamin did not value much of his radio work and did not provide copies of it to his friend and quasi-official archivist, Gershom Scholem. For this reason and due to the vagaries of twentieth-century historical events, his broadcast texts were unavailable when Suhrkamp published Benjamin's Collected Writings (Gesammelte Schriften); they were eventually published in a supplementary volume. Scholars have begun to investigate Benjamin's radio praxis. A few of his broadcasts were translated and published in Selected Writings; many more were included in the recent publication of Radio Benjamin. Nonetheless, seven of the surviving broadcast texts were not translated in these works; they are presented in English for the first time here. To conclude the dissertation, these translations of his radio work are considered in the light of Benjamin's own famous essay on translation, The Task of the Translator.
