There are two kinds of approach to world literature, the text-centric one and the reading-centric one. The reading-centric world literature is what we are studying these days, which is a perspective about literary world built up by reading. Thus, world literature cannot be apart from localization, for those traveling literary works, the exotic cultural environment they are heading to is always a great challenge. Literary works need to move into a cultural context which is dominated by totally different social, linguistic and historical backgrounds; some changes must be made to make those works become compatible with the new environment. In the world literary system, these rewritings and appropriations happen in every culture, including those peripheral cultures in disadvantaged positions. In this process, local transcultural mediators will bring national literary influence into foreign texts. As a result, a world literature in national perspective will be built up among local readers. Such a world literature will vary according to different periods and different countries. This dissertation explores Chinese people's perception of world literature in the early 20th century and the spreading of Russian literature in China as an illustration of the complexity of the process of localization within world literature. It addresses, in particular, the role of Lu Xun as a transcultural mediator.
