This dissertation asserts that most postcolonial plays that recall the history of postcolonial peoples during pre-colonial and/or colonial periods usually achieve two functions: to subvert the discursive history of imperialism, and to redress the socio-political problems encountered by post-colonial communities. Applying Michel Foucault's theory of counter-history together with other perspectives of postcolonialism, I examine six postcolonial dramatic texts which I believe to be representative of most Anglophonic postcolonial drama that recovers past histories, i.e. Ama Ata Aidoo's Anowa, Jack Davis' Kullark, and Dennis Scot's An Echo in the Bone in chapter one, and Girish Karnad's The Dreams of Tipu Sultan, Ngugu wa Thiong'o and Micere Githae Mugo's The Trial of Dedan Kimathi, and Wole Soyinka's A Dance of the Forests in chapters two, three, and four respectively. I argue that while these plays operate as counter-historical/ counter-discursive narratives that counteract the heavy impact of colonialism, they reflect the playwrights' active involvement in their contemporary soci-political life. The selected plays were written and produced to articulate the ethical commitment of the playwrights who as social reformers employed the art of drama to call for social justice and fight against the neo-colonial and contemporary systems of oppression.
