"Remains to be Seen: The Afterlife of Russian Realism," closely analyzes the various models by which the Russian realist tradition was reanimated in western Europe by twentieth-century translators, biographers, and authors who positioned themselves as its rightful heirs. In particular, I focus on Ivan Bunin's biography and rewritings of Lev Tolstoy, Constance Garnett's translations of Fyodor Dostoevsky, and Katherine Mansfield's plagiarism and revisions of Anton Chekhov. In each of these cases I have isolated intertextual dialogues that revolve around exposed and wasting bodies. This approach allows me to conceive the evolution of Russian literary history through time and space as a series of pathological attempts to preserve, reanimate, or rehabilitate the dead weight of the literary past. In Chapter 1, "Sepulchral Passports; or, The Body, the Body, Always the Body," I show how Bunin has reimagined the narrative possibilities of Tolstoy's discarded bodies. In Chapter 2, "Alternate Afterlives: Translating Dostoevsky's Corpses," I address the ways in which Dostoevsky's most famous translator amplifies the doubts raised by the unburied bodies in his fiction. In my final chapter, "A Series of Heavens: Consumption and Consummation in Chekhov and Mansfield," I argue that Mansfield makes literal Chekhov's metaphors of malady. Translating these corpses-moving them into another language, tradition, and geographical space-the twentieth-century rewriters radically revise existing intertextual paradigms. Their work suggests that literature's obsession with its own source material is best staged as a corporeal drama-a drama in which the rehabilitations of texts are performed on the dead bodies they house.
