Modern technology has reached the automotive industry and the Internet has invaded modern vehicles. These modern vehicles provide a variety of new features and technologies that are beneficial to consumers while being operated. Along with ingenuity, these features introduce an entirely new set of security vulnerabilities. This research reviews the current state of both the physical and wireless vehicle infrastructure security, the hidden underlying vulnerabilities, and provides recommendations for further analysis to prevent any mishaps. This research found and identified the current shortcomings regarding the automotive security infrastructure by looking at current literature and research from different sources. Additionally, this research dives into great detail regarding the current technology, software and firmware used by modern vehicles and the implementation on electronic control unit (ECU) to execute different tasks throughout the vehicle. The research also outlines the different security vulnerabilities found throughout a variety of vehicle platforms and between 2014 and 2019 models. This research provided recommendations to support the idea that third party software needs government standards enforced to mitigate vulnerabilities passed from within these third-party applications to internal systems. The physical aspects within a vehicle and their exploits are dated technology that needs layered security involvement. Lastly, research and development for new technology in future vehicles need further analysis to identify any vulnerabilities and avoid exploitation before being delivered to consumers in the automotive market.
