The purpose of this qualitative case study was to understand how encouraging multiculturalism and family engagement might also serve to reduce the affective filter. Specifically, this inquiry was an analysis of practice of Ossining's dual language program as it relates to certain aspects of the curriculum, research-based instructional practices, and family engagement. As part of this study, the Center for Applied Linguistics Guiding Principles for Dual Language Education was used to examine: (a) equal status of the partner language, which in this study is Spanish, according to the program design; (b) practices that encourage multiculturalism; (c) systemwide activities aimed at engaging families; (d) and how these factors might combine to influence the affective filter. A sampling of classes in Grades 3-5 was studied. Findings stemming from this study can guide and inform decisions taken by district leaders with respect to program implementation and meeting the goal of promoting multiculturalism. Given that other districts may also use dual language programs in their schools, this study may also serve to guide future program reviews beyond the district being studied. Additionally, since little research has been done focusing on schoolwide and elementary teachers' practices to reduce the affective filter, this is another unique aspect of this study that might be of significance.
