Previous studies typically found that learning a second language involves a number of attributes of the learner, the instructor and the context in which it occurs. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the process by which adults learn a second language in a traditional classroom setting in which the instructor is either a native speaker or not, and how student characteristics interact with the instructor. Students taking beginning level college Spanish classes and their instructors were asked to complete a questionnaire and an individual semi-structured interview, regarding their motivation and their perceptions of the study of the target language and the instructors' characteristics and teaching methods. The instructors and their classes were observed to gather additional insights. The results demonstrated five themes regarding enhanced teaching effectiveness of native speaking instructors over non-native speaking instructors in teaching a second language: 1) greater confidence in teaching the language, 2) superior cultural awareness of the target language, and 3) greater understanding of the structure of the target language. Student perceptions with native speaking instructors included: 1) greater motivation to learn the target language, and 2) enhanced interpersonal perceptions of the student/instructor interaction. The present study concluded that there are clear advantages to having an instructor whose native language is that which is being taught. Although this approach may be difficult to achieve in practice, the factors to produce successful outcomes may be reproduced using other means. Future studies may consider replicating these findings with a larger sample of instructors to provide greater validity. In addition, other studies may vary the degree of similarity between the native language and the target language.
