Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2009.
This study investigated the relationship between principal leadership skills and self-efficacy with their individual and academic school performance. The analysis examined the relationship and predictability between principal leadership, self-efficacy and individual and school performance. The sample of 118 participants was drawn from 56 school districts located in Southern California. A factorial analysis was used to determine the constructs associated with the leadership standards assessment and the principal sense of efficacy scale. All of the hypotheses were supported and the findings indicated a small to moderate relationship between principal leadership skills, self-efficacy and individual and a school's academic performance. The constructs associated with the leadership standards found four primary constructs of visionary leadership, management of organization, instructional leadership and community and political leadership. The principal sense of efficacy scale showed similar findings from the previous studies and will add to the validity of the scale. Using student achievement scores to measure a principal's performance is new in current educational leadership research, and further investigation is needed to validate the current leadership assessment. Research using student achievement and a principal's individual performance may help develop future educational leadership selection and professional development training.
