This thesis explores how humans' identity and sense of place are linked within the deeply interconnected ecological systems of earth. In exploring this chiasmic intertwining and scrutinizing the ethos of the grand narrative of consumerism and capitalism, readers can begin to see how art can bring to light the havoc of historical and modern-day ecological crises. This analysis explores the ecopoetics of John Clare, Rashidah Ismaili, and Mary Oliver and their deep ecological insights into the connection of human identity and place. I examine these poets' rhetorical strategies and how their poetics contribute to a universal conversation about climate change and sustainability. This thesis is contextualized by the framework of deep ecology and incorporates scholars who have studied the influence of place on humans' self-identification processes. It is a hybrid work that includes an appendix of my own poems as a personal response to these poets' works, showing how one individual's involvement with the tenets of deep ecology confronts the changing ecology of today.
