This study examined how family elders in one community in rural Kalimantan, Indonesia, transmit their traditional and Christian spiritual beliefs to successive generations. The data for this study were obtained in 2013 and 2015, during grounded theory interviews with both family elders and the clergy who serve them. These data were verified by examining traditional folktales most of which were archived several years earlier. Family elders described six methods by which they transmit traditional spiritual beliefs. (a) observation and imitation, (b) questions and answers, (c) oral communication, (d) rituals, (e) pomali rules, and (f) oral storytelling. The first three methods (a-c) are used for a variety of topics and the second three methods (d-f) are used specifically for transmitting spiritual beliefs. Rituals involve the prescription of pomali rules, and telling of sacred folktales about the origin and purpose of the rituals and pomali rules. Although instructional folktales and personal testimonies are used mainly to transmit moral values, they also imply traditional spiritual beliefs. To transmit Christian beliefs, most family elders depend on the observation of church rituals. However, church rituals use Bible readings and sermons rather than the oral telling of Bible stories. Most family elders have a limited repertoire of Bible stories which they use mainly to correct the misbehavior of small children. The transmission of both traditional and Christian spiritual beliefs are being challenged by recent developments in public education, travel, electronic media, and cultural tourism. Thus rituals, pomali rules, and oral storytelling are becoming less common and less meaningful to younger elders.
