Thesis (Ph.D.)--California School of Professional Psychology - Los Angeles, 1988.
The purpose of this current investigation was to identify the relationship between predictor variables and success for North American English teachers living and teaching professionally in the Peoples Republic of China. Predictor variables were derived from three psychological tests, (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator). The dependent measure--success was measured by the Performance Evaluation Form-Revised, which was constructed specifically for this study. Using the Performance Evaluation Form-Revised (PEF-R), subjects were evaluated by Self, Supervisor and Peer ratings, and were evaluated at 6-month and 12-month intervals. The independent measures drawn from the three psychological inventories were then correlated with the dependent measure--success to determine which variables were most predictive of a successful outcome.Subjects--Topical Terms:

One major finding of this current research was that the Performance Evaluation Form-Revised provides a useful and valid measurement of success. Secondly, inter-rater reliabilities conducted on Self, Supervisor and Peer ratings indicated that ratings were reliable and were consistent enough in their assessment of subjects to trust their evaluations in determining criteria for success. It was found, however, that a composite rating of an individual will yield a more accurate evaluation of the candidate's performance. The third finding was that predictor variables generated from the psychological inventories do exist. Those variables are the Intuitive scale of the Myers-Briggs; the L (lie) scale, the K (infrequency) scale and the Depression scale of the MMPI; and the "cool vs. warm" scale, the "submissive vs. dominant" scale, the "forthright vs. shrewd" scale, the "conservative vs. experimenting" scale and the "undisciplined vs. control" scale of the 16PF.

The results of this study suggest that there are useful measurements for predicting success overseas. Results are most specific, however, to persons conducting their lives in the Peoples Republic of China under the auspices of the English Language Institute/China. Therefore, implications for pre-departure screening and evaluation of ELI/C personnel are also discussed.
